If you’ve been doing any looking around on the internet trying to get a handle on how to bring your creative ideas online in the form of a business, you know that your brand should be foremost in your planning. It’s not enough to have some nice colors and a well-designed logo, however. Forget about all the visual stuff for now. How do you want your brand to make people FEEL? What emotions do you want to conjure when your people land on your website or see your business card?
Your essence is that special mix of how you understand yourself, how you want others to perceive you, and how you utilize your gifts to be of service for your people. We do this every day through the clothes we wear, the way we speak, and the company we keep.
There are more ways for exploring who you are than I could possibly list here, and the best thing to do is start down one or a few paths to see where they lead. Self-exploration and understanding is best done when you follow your inner voice and intuition. If you are doing this, the signs and next steps will lead you in the right direction.
Whether the Meyers-Briggs personality test, astrology, or psychological analysis, there is a wealth of value in self-analyzing. Look at yourself and how you are perceived in the world from a bunch of different angles, and they will start to come together to weave your truth. I recently learned that I’m a female INTJ (.8% of the population), and this gave me the personal permission I’ve been needing to just do me, instead of feeling like the odd (wo)man out in most social situations. This has given me the confidence I’ve been needing in life to show up fully for the people I’m wanting to serve.
Have you been interested in Buddhism and Eastern spirituality, a philosophy or way of thinking from the past, or all encompassing mysticism? Now’s the time to dive headfirst into the books and resources you haven’t had the time to explore. Pick a couple resources and see where they take you. You may find out your original idea for a business doesn’t suit you at all. That’s OK. Learn what feels right to you, and integrate this deeper way of thinking into your daily life. I promise you will have epiphanies that bleed into your business like you never thought possible.
Take a Look Backward
Remember who you were when you were a child and before there was any societal programming done to you. Strip away perceived values that were imposed on you growing up, and rewrite your own rules based on who you were then. What was important to you? What did you do in your spare time when left to your own devices? Try getting back to these activities in whatever way makes sense to you. For example, I used to love to draw and explore in the woods with my dog. I now have gotten back into scribbling in a sketchbook and hiking as much as possible with my furry companion. It feels good to get back to the core of who you are.
Take it further with a brand mood board
I have my clients answer some deep-dive questions and then create their brand mood board in Pinterest. I invite you to do the same for yourself after all your exploration. You can start to visually mix in your essence with the industry or business you are wanting to grow. This will eventually be your brand’s mood board, and will inform the color palette, tone, and feeling you want to evoke with it as you move forward to bring your creative business online.
