I’ve been a creative my entire life, as I’m sure many of you are. I’ve gone through so many phases and dabbled in many mediums. Each time, I would get feverish about the beginning stages of learning a new craft, I would barely sleep. I remember when I was absolutely obsessed with making altered art books, where you take old books and made them into artwork with mixed media techniques like ripping, painting and collaging. I was working as a hairstylist full time, so on my days off I would literally jump out of bed as soon as I woke up so I could maximize the amount of hours available to focus and make these suckers. I loved it, and I loved that feeling. I wasn’t even getting paid for it.
I’m lucky enough that I’ve finally found something that I feel the same way about, albeit tempered on the feverish side! That’s what I wanted to talk about this week, especially as I’ve been travelling (which I love) and making a workspace out of many different places. Most people who are not entrepreneur minded would take the opportunity to just “be on vacation” indefinitely and not get into the groove. Not I. My mind is still cranking with ideas in the mornings and I have to get to a work station fast to implement or learn what’s in my head. Web design and branding for creative entrepreneurs is something that will always be changing so I will not be getting bored in the future.
Sometimes, however, we need to take a step back and think about if what we are spending our time on is really enriching us the way we hoped. Unsure? See which category you fall into below.
Think about what you’re working on creating right now; the business you’ve started and continue to turn into your livelihood.
Are you in love with it?
Do you constantly have ideas to implement and a never-ending to do list?
Do you drive people a little nuts because you talk about it all the time?
You’re on the right path. Keep it up and just get better at it.
On the other hand….
Are you struggling to finish even simple tasks related to your business?
Are you just going through the motions because it’s what you started and now think you need to continue?
Have you lost that unmistakable gut feeling of excitement when you think about the next days’ task list?
It may be time to re-evaluate. This doesn’t always mean quit your business and change course completely.
Maybe you still love what you do but not the way it’s happening. Try to look at your project with a beginner’s mind and evaluate what you could do differently. If you started your business today with what you know now, what would you do differently? Take some precious time to step away and not think about the day-to-day for awhile. Take a trip, a walk, or read a book and let your mind wander. Schedule these breaks and make them a habit for a few weeks to see what changes. You will probably get ideas for a new product to make, re-evaluate your approach with employees or a want to totally revamp your branding to reflect your taste and appeal to customers you really want.
I hope that all of you are doing what makes you jump out of bed in the morning, and if not, I hope these tips have helped you get started on fixing that!
Let me know what is getting you excited in the mornings in the comments!
