Making a living doing what you are creatively obsessed with is one of the most rewarding ventures you’ll ever embark on. There’s an endless list of to-do and learning that needs to be completed every day in order to be successful and get to where you want to be. Be aware, though, you can spend a large amount of time following the advice of what everyone else has done, watering down your own unique point of view in an attempt to reach your goals.
This is the path. The well-worn trail that most business owners take when they get started doing business online. You read other successful creative’s blogs, follow them on social media, and download their free resources for getting started down this path because they’ve done it and here are the 10 steps you need to take to do it too.
Problem is, you can expend way too much valuable energy focusing on what others have done before you, what worked for them, that you can lose sight of how you are going to stand out from the crowd.
Get off the trail.
When I go on hikes in my attempt to keep the balance in life, I like to step away from the well-worn trail that everyone else stays on and explore the untouched loveliness of nature. You stumble upon some magical, untapped views like this.
I go hiking because I need to get away from the screen (I highly suggest this for anyone, but especially entrepreneurs). There’s a lot of noise out there, especially the digital kind. Shutting it off is not only beneficial, it’s necessary if you are going to find your own voice.
The same holds true for blazing your own path when it come to your creative business. Consuming with the crowd will only lead you to comparison and judgement. There is a lot to navigate when you take this journey of having an online business, be sure to keep your goal in mind, and don’t be afraid to do it differently from the pack. This is what will set you apart and ultimately make you more desirable!
Your ideal customers don’t want to work with someone who is an obvious copy of someone else’s success, or a cobbled together franken-business with bits and pieces of what other people are doing. They are looking for the distinctive perspective that only you can provide!
Here’s how you can achieve this.
Pick your favorite 3 influencers
Yes, just 3. They should all be in or related to your field of study, but not necessarily linked to each other. This way you will still get a broad perspective, but only pay attention to the people that truly resonate with you. The ones that you find to be speaking the truth for YOU. Look for the kind of work that is a the level of quality you want to achieve in your own business in a few years, not in a few months.
Unsubscribe to (almost) everything
Take the same approach as above with your social media and newsletter subscriptions. Of course don’t limit it to 3 sources, but keep a well-curated list with information that really enriches you, not just fluff that adds to the noise. Following a huge number of people only crowds your brain and your judgement.
Take the time to seek clarity
Step away from the devices, get outside, talk to your loved ones. This is the best way to get a broader perspective on any situation. Turning off the spinning wheel of to-dos and worries gives your mind a chance to wander and clarify who you really are and what direction you want to go in.
Takeaway: Limit your consumption, learn from only the best, and get off the main trail to blaze your own path with your business!
