This week I decided to update my website yet again to make it more brand focused and easy to read for my audience. In the past this meant being stressed and laser focused on that end goal, but during this process I’ve been taking my time instead of racing to the finish line like I have before. When we get that first spark of inspiration, the tendency is to get it out there as soon as possible, but this misses the point of why we went into business for ourselves in the first place.
We build our own careers in order to enjoy all the moments, the ups and downs, the struggles. All of it. I know I do. Because all the problems that being an entrepreneur can throw at you never compare to the feeling of being under someone else’s thumb. Nothing.
This is a gentle reminder to slow down and enjoy every day, every hour, every minute if possible. Being present and languishing in the process has so many benefits that go beyond just our professional careers. It’s an excellent practice for our mental well-being and our relationships as well.

Whatever you are working on will be better if you take your time with each step. The end result will be much more clear to the customer or end user if you take this approach. You will enjoy yourself more as well.
A few things that are helping me right now
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Required reading for anyone but especially when you have at least a hundred tasks to do all the time. I’m finally getting around to reading this on my breaks while I practice the 52:17 Method. Eckhart Tolle offers a modern approach to the age old wisdom of mindfulness. It’s an excellent introduction to get you started if you have a hard time with older books about Zen Buddhism and meditation.
Stop, Breathe & Think
I was over the moon this week when I discovered this new meditation app. You can plug in how you are feeling mentally, physically and emotionally to get a personalized guided meditation. And yes, it’s the first of it’s kind I’ve seen that is FREE. So go get it now.
We all have our project management or task tracking software, and if not you need to get a system set up, like yesterday. I couldn’t get by without Asana to organize my tasks into projects and keep track of the never-ending list to accomplish. I love the calendar view so I can drag and drop tasks to the days I think it might happen.
I was already using Asana when I came across this article on Fast Company that explains how the creators embrace mindfulness as a business practice. Sold. Oh wait, this is FREE too!
I’m a self professed foodie and wellness nerd. But I don’t always have the time to make the simple yet fancy meals I love. I make sure to get at least some raw nutrients every morning with an easy green smoothie. The mental benefits are undeniable when I have one of these guys. It keep me sane and balanced. And yes, they taste good! You should try it.
Do you have your own methods for slowing down and enjoying the present when there is so much to do? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
